Choosing the Right Tree Fertilizer. Trees need nutrients to grow. If these nutrients are not found in the ground, fertilizer will have to be used. Your options while using fertilizer is either organic or inorganic. Inorganic is good if your tree needs a quick dosage, and your soil is generally good. Organic fertilizer is good for improving your soil over time, but takes longer to decompose and is generally more expensive.
Getting Rid of Tent Worms. Tent worms are disgusting little creatures that will infest and eat your tree. These tent worms will go away on their own naturally, but not before eating at least part of the growth on your tree. You can remove these insects with insecticide, but this can be dangerous. You can also kill off tent worms by squishing them or cutting them, then throwing them in bags to be hauled off. Any method should be done early morning or late evening.
Mulching Trees. One of the most beneficial tasks a person can do for the health of a tree is to mulch it properly. Not only can mulch maintain proper water and moisture levels, it also minimizes weed growth and improves soil structure. Follow these handy tips to discover how to properly mulch your trees.
Removing an Entire Tree. You can remove a tree in your yard with a lot of care. If you want to cut the tree down yourself, be extremely careful that it will not fall on anything. You can cut a notch in once side then cut on the other side so the tree will fall toward the notch. You can remove the stump by cutting it all the way down, then drill holes in it. Pour water and nitrogen rich fertilizer into the stump to speed up the decaying process. After a little waiting, your stump should be completely decomposed and the rest should be removed easily.
Removing Dead Wood. Dead wood on your tree can be unsightly, and can also make fruit trees not grow as well. You do not need to remove dead wood on most trees unless it bothers you, or if it can cause damage to your house. It is easiest to remove the dead wood in the spring when the leaves start to grow, since dead wood will not have any growth on it. Be careful not to unbalance the tree, since that can damage your tree irreparably.
Small Trees Can Become Very Big Trees. When planting a tree, you need to think ahead to how big the tree can get. Large trees with long roots can be dangerous to your home. Roots can destabilize your foundation, ruin your pavement, damage your pipes, and lower your property values. Make sure to plant any trees that can grow large far away from your home, or if you have a small yard, to only plant small trees.
