Garden Flowers

Choosing the Right Flower Fertilizer

Summary: Flowers need different nutrients to grow, and not all of those nutrients will be found in your garden soil. You can either plant plants that only require the nutrients you have in your soil, or find a fertilizer that will replenish the nutrients not naturally found in your soil. A good mixed fertilizer will usually do the trick, but you can also test your soil to see what specific nutrients you need.

Every living thing in this world needs something to feed off of in order to grow. If animals do not receive the right nutrients, they will not be able to survive. The same holds true for the plants that you are growing in your lawn. Even though most plants do not consume things like we do, they still need to eat, so to speak. The difference with plants is that since they do not move and cannot go hunting for food, everything they need has to come to them.

Most plants will find the nutrients they need from one of these sources: the water, the sun, or the soil that their roots reach into. All these of these things can make a huge difference in the healthiness of your plant. The first two items, the water and sunlight your plants receive, most of the variation we can provide is in the amount the plants receive. The soil, however, is a very different issue.

Different plants need different soil. Some flowers will need lots of nutrients, while others will need lots of acid in the soil. If you want to grow great plants, one of the basic things you need to know is what type of soil your plants need. While you may consider only growing plants that will find the nutrients they need in the soil you already have, you can change the soil a little by using fertilizer.

To get the most comprehensive idea of what nutrients your plants will need, you can have your soil tested, either by hiring someone to do it, or by buying a kit. When you know what is in your soil, you will know exactly what to add. If you want your flowers to grow the best, this is probably your best option, but it is difficult and time intensive.

Your other option is to buy blended fertilizers, such as Miracle Gro ®. Many places will have blended fertilizers that are more specialized, but since these companies do not make the fertilizer specifically for your lawn, it will not be quite as testing your soil. It is still a valid option, and it is a good way to get your plants the nutrients they need without too much work.
